The Dalek Book is gorgeously illustrated. Unlike the Dr Who Annuals, which were padded out with lucky dips from the children’s encyclopedia, the “features” are all relevant to the Daleks. There are 7 of them, and 11 stories and strips. The book's stories combine to make a decade-long arc of Jeff, Mary and Andy Stone fighting the Dalek invasion of the solar system ( AD). The best stuff is at the beginning with the Daleks conquering Venus; once they get beaten back in the confusingly written climax to The Secret of the Mountain, things just ain't the same.

Some of the new art is also very /5(9). "Resurrection of the Daleks" was a violent, bleak and despondant story. Nearly everybody in it dies a horrible death. Tegan is so distraught she walks out on the Doctor. How else can you get the full horror of the story over to readers without resorting to Kurt Vonnegut-style black humour, which is what Saward does best anyway.
